Basic Korean Lesson 1.06: The 오 Vowel

In Lesson 5, we have learned about the vowel 애 which sounds as soft “ae” as in speck.

In this lesson, we will learn a new vowel – the vowel 오, which sounds as “o” in toss or “ow” in float.

Hangeul
Phonetic Symbol [o] *from the International Phonetic Alphabet)
Romanization o *from the Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 2000)

As you can see, this vowel looks like the vowel 어 that’s been rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Sounds a bit complicated? Let’s put it more simply then. The vowel 오 is like letter O resting on the upside-down letter T. That’s your vowel 오! Very easy to recall, isn’t it?

Do your best to be familiar with this vowel, memorize its appearance, so that you will be able to combine it with the other vowels that we have studied before and the rest of the vowels and consonants that we will be studying on the next lessons.

Now, for you to get familiar with the vowel 오, we will use it the way we used the previous vowels. We will begin by using it as a substitute for the sound /o/ in English words.

Do your best to be familiar with this vowel, memorize its appearance, so that you will be able to combine it with the other vowels that we have studied before and the rest of the vowels and consonants that we will be studying on the next lessons.

Is This The Rookie That Will Steal Away Jang Geun Suk's Throne?

One “Super Star K5” contestant has recently drawing attentions online and has topped headlines for being a Jang Geun Suk look-alike!

Three days ago, the 26 year old Ahn Sung Hyun has caught the eyes of the public, not to mention the judges in “Super Star K5″ becuase in more that one way, he seemed to look a lot like Jang Geun Suk.

During the audition, Ahn Sung Hyun performed an acoustic version of Dynamic Duo‘s “Go Back”. He was able to please the judges with his soulful vocals and guitar skills.

Though not all of the review were positive, the special judge Yoon Min Soo has taken the rookie's side by commenting:
“If you try a little harder, I think you will become a very unique artist.”
Now, now. Is this a possible threat to Jang Geun Suk's career in the future, seeing that this rookie indeed is talented, not to mention their striking resemblance.
Source: Soompi

Could be. But if we dig a little farther back in the past, there's been a handful of other stars that's been rumored to look like the Prince in one way or another, but has not become a major threat to Keun-chan's career.

As a bonus, I've collected them for you. Here they are.

I have discovered an article seeming to claim that JKS is like Hyde reincarnated. Hyde or Hideto Takarai (寶井 秀人 is a 44-year old Japanese musician, singer-songwriter, and actor.

Searching further, I have found out that this is not just some random claim of some attention-seeker blogger. The fact is, Keun-chan is a fan of Hyde! Nw that gives us a slight clue as to why they look similar.

Image ideas: The Dream Catcher

Here's another one. Do you know T-max, a South Korean pop group under Planet905? Their former member Park Han Bi was also once praised for looking like Keun-chan.

Image idea: Ningin

And here's a little peek into the future Keun Suk ahjussi. I wonder if Harry Potter fans would agree to this, but there's this one photo of Keun-chan that he actually looks like Professor Snape! Really, how can I disagree to this?

And how can we leave this one off the list?

Others have claimed that Hwang Tae Kyung and Jeremy had a common surgeon that's why they look qute similar, but really, why don't they just admit that it's all because of these boys' charming smile. Come on now, tell me I'm wrong.
🎶 You and me, I love my boy 🎶

Asia Prince JKS To Come Back on Television as ‘Pretty Boy’

It's been a long while since Jang Geun Suk's last TV drama has ended, and despite all his consistently successful tours, concerts, and album releases that followed, well, let's admit it, eels. We miss the Hwang Tae Kyung, Seo In-Ha, and Kang Mu-Kyul side of Geun Suk Oppa.

Well, good news, for our longings will soon be over! Rejoice, and rejoice more, for the ever charming and captivating actor side of our Sukkie will be coming back very soon to our televisions through the most anticipated new drama entitled "Pretty Boy". The drama is expected to be released in the latter half of 2013.

Keun-chan is going to portray the role of Dokgo Matte, the man with the prettiest face in all the world. It's really going to be a big leap towards his becoming the official world prince, wouldn't you agree? And as sure as you are reading these words right now, millions of eels all over the globe sure are looking forward to being with the Prince once more, if only in the small screen.

The drama will be produced by Group Eight who was also one behind the success of some popular idol dramas such as "Princess Hours" and "Boys over Flowers" to name a few. The drama script is going be penned by the hit screen writer Yoo Young Ah whose previous works include movies like "Korea" and "Miracle in Cell No.7".
Group Eight revealed:

“From the initial planning, we had already zeroed in on Jang Geun Suk to lead the drama. To raise the production quality, we have also met with Jang Geun Suk for discussions on many occasions. Jang Geun Suk has already been in the acting business for 21 years, and he will be showing his experienced acting ability through his role as Dokgo Matte.

We have already received many phone calls regarding broadcast rights for ‘Pretty Boy’ from countries in Asia, Europe, and South America"," the production team also expressed. This goes to show that the drama is being looked upon favourably overseas prior to broadcast. The storyline of the drama will be sticking closely to the original comic series, so please look forward to it.”
Pretty Boy is based on a popular comic book series penned by Chun Gi Young. It is a story of the prettiest boy on Earth who was torn apart from his family for many years, his struggle to find them again, his experiences with true love, and his adventures around teenage girls whose hearts were captivated by his unique charms. As for me, I'm still in love with Hwang Tae Kyung, but I'm also looking forward to be won over by Dokgo Matte this time.

If you're a certified eel, surely, you are as excited as I am right now. Feel free to share your thoughts below. ^_^

JKS' Car Accident a Minor One? - Eels Objected

A not-so-good news shook the eels' world when it was reported that the apple of their eye, Jang Geun Suk was involved in a car accident last Thursday around 6 o'clock in the evening. Sukkie was on his way to Incheon Airport to catch his flight to Thailand in order to promote Team H's newest album "I Just Wanna Have Fun". Sukkie was driving his own car. Unfortunately, the tire at the passenger's seat went flat, and his car collided with the bus in front of him.

Sukkie was not hurt - much to the relief of the eels (including me). He was still able to catch his flight on time and was able to go on with the promotion in Japan. However, though some of us were relieved at the words "minor accident" used by some article writers in various KPOP influenced sites, some eels, after seeing the actual photo of Sukkie's wrecked car, were not happy and even expressed their objections and irritations on the way the accident was described.

One eel commented:
It was NOT a minor accident!... When I read Minor Accident I think of a little fender bender or something. Look at this pic...does that LOOK freaking MINOR??? His tire BURST, be ran into a bus, the bus then hit a taxi. His car is totaled"
Other eels feel sad because it seems more and more obvious that many South Koreans hate Jang Geun Suk without any particular reason. Their contempt for the innocent artist becomes evident evident in news articles as biases can be hinted.

Another eel commented:
This accident is SO MUCH serious than reported! A BUS!! Could u believe that the impact is greater for a bus than a sports car?! I still believe there is NO Love for him in Korea... Sorry but true & I'm really depressed for Oppa :'(( Look at 'Louis'! I know we can't reveal context frm his APP.... I just feel for Keun suk Oppa... Thank god he is alive.

The entire SBS news can be viewed through this link:
http://m.sbs.co.kr/news/sbsnews/news_content.jsp?pmArticleId=N1001693415

In the end, the eels still resorted to peaceful means of dealing with the issue by just continuing on cheering Prince JKS and giving him the move and support he deserves. Eels have also expressed their deep concern and also wish for The Prince to be more careful.

Meet the Cutest Crab on Earth - Sukkie-ssi

Another cute selca posted by Jang Geun Suk via twitter was being feasted by eels last March 8.

JKS a Self-Proclaimed Asia Prince?

Several fans have been reacting to recent posts on several sites calling Jang Geun Suk as "self-proclaimed prince".

This caused a stir among the eels family. They felt the need to defend Sukkie, a multi-talented artist who, even to the peak of his success and fame, has remained a down-to-earth person who always consider himself as "no more special than anyone else". But since JKS is a peace-loving person, that aura reverberates too among his fans. Eels can be deeply hurt and would sometimes react to false reviews and accusations towards Jang Geun Suk, but most of the time, they would just opt to leave the haters keep hating, and would just focus on supporting the prince even more, enfolding Sukkie in a stronger barrier of love and support that haters could not even penetrate.

Nowadays, when fans are as noncommittal as bees transferring from flower to flower in search of a sweeter nectar, one can hardly find a star like Jang Geun Suk, who is deeply loved by his eels, staying by his side through all character, fashion, musical concept, or hairstyle changes. His pure heart has created a family bond not only between him and every eel, but also among the eels themselves. In search for JKS attention, eels don't feel any competition towards each other, because the Prince treats them all equally. That, and more is enough for him to be called a prince.

It was the millions of eels, and not Jang Geun Suk himself who proclaimed him "Asia Prince", and who are now proclaiming him "World Prince" because of his hardwork, compassion, and inextinguishable dedication in providing entertainment and inspiration to his fans who constantly look up to him. He never "self-proclaimed", and in fact, there is no need for him to do so, because in the hearts of every loyal eel, he already is the World Prince.

So, can you "feel the beat" of Prince JKS as well? Comments are welcome. Thanks for dropping by ^_^

Pre-Filming Video - So Charming!

He's getting even more "beautiful" everyday.
Never loses any ounce of cuteness.
Aja, My World Prince! Keep winning.
You still have the most charming smile in the universe. ^_^

That comment was mine. The others say:
YOU LOOK SO COOL ♥♥♥♥♥
World Prince!! I Love Uuuu so much. Quiero verte de cerca.. Saluditos desde Venezuela.Translation: How I want to see you up close. A salute from Venezuela.
awww, love the cute face he made at the end.. ;D
kawayyyyy su carita al final fue lo mejor, me recordo los gestos que mis sobrinos hacen cuando toman su jarabe jajajajaj tan lindo este hombre cada vez se gana mas mi corazón.
Traslation: kawayyyyy his face at the end was the best, gestures reminded me that my nephews do when they take their syrup hahaha so cute this man wins more my heart even more.
Well, I couldn't blame them from making such fuss about a pre-filming, less than one minute video. It's really captivating - just as what to expect from a reigning World Prince. Are you getting more curious? Watch it, then, and share on the comment box below on how you have found his face in the end. Here you go:

Conversation on the video:
What is Team H? 8
なんねんか前まではあんなドリンク1本のんだら
すぐけんこうになったんだけど
いまは1.5リットルをのんでも
からだが前みたいじゃないTEAM H
translation : What is Team H? 8
Up to a couple of years ago
I felt rejuvenated soon after drinking such a bottle of nutritional drink.
But now, even if drinking 1.5 liter,
I don’t feel so.
TEAM H body is no more the same as before…
